COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The goal of this Weill-Cornell CME activity is to improve the knowledge of pathogenesis and treatment of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.
At the conclusion of this symposium, participants should be able to:

1. Understand the unique lipid abnormalities in type 2 diabetes mellitus and learn the current lipid treatment recommendations

2. Understand the abnormalities in vascular endothelial function in diabetes and insulin’s effects on the endothelium

3. Learn the pathogenesis and current therapies for erectile dysfunction in individuals with diabetes

4. Appreciate the pathogenesis and the differences of type 2 diabetes in African-American and African-European populations

5. Understand the components of the metabolic syndrome and how they relate to diabetes and cardiovascular disease

6. Understand the causes and type of ventricular dysfunction in type 2 diabetes

7. Understand the different treatment modalities for obesity and how they impact on diabetes

STATEMENT OF NEED
The incidence of diabetes mellitus and obesity is increasing throughout the world. In that hyperglycemia and diabetes have significant effects on cardiovascular disease, the committee that was formed after the first symposium, decided to add vascular disease into the diabetes and obesity topics of the 2003 symposium. The committee also reviewed upcoming new treatments in the field. Based on this, a questionnaire of new diabetes/obesity drugs was distributed among full-time and voluntary Endocrinology faculty at Weill-Cornell to decide on the topics of interest for the inclusion in this year’s symposium.
